Cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful procedures in the United States, and today’s technology makes it more precise than ever. At Boynton Beach ASC, LLC, our surgeons use the LENSAR ALLY femtosecond laser system to perform key steps of cataract surgery with computer-guided accuracy.
What is the Femtosecond Laser?
A femtosecond laser uses extremely short pulses of light energy, each lasting a quadrillionth of a second. Because each pulse is so brief, the laser can separate tissue very precisely while producing very little heat, which limits its effect on the surrounding eye. Before treatment begins, the laser system captures a detailed image of your eye. This image guides the laser, so each step is customized to the shape and structure of your eye instead of relying only on handheld instruments.
How the Laser Is Used During Cataract Surgery
In traditional cataract surgery, the surgeon performs several delicate steps by hand. With laser-assisted cataract surgery, the femtosecond laser creates small incisions that are precisely sized and positioned. It also makes a smooth, round opening in the thin capsule that holds the cataract and uses gentle laser energy to soften and divide the cloudy lens so it is easier to remove. When needed, the laser can also create incisions that help correct astigmatism.
After these steps, your surgeon removes the cataract and places your new intraocular lens (IOL).
Laser cataract surgery at Boynton Beach ASC, LLC is performed as an outpatient procedure. It takes about 20 minutes per eye, and numbing drops keep you comfortable throughout. Most patients go home the same day.
The Benefits of Laser Precision
Computer-guided precision can lead to more predictable results and help ensure your IOL is positioned correctly. This accuracy is especially valuable for patients choosing advanced lenses, such as toric IOLs for astigmatism or multifocal IOLs for vision at multiple distances. Laser-assisted surgery may also shorten surgical time, lower the risk of complications, and support faster visual recovery.
Is Laser Cataract Surgery Right for You?
Laser-assisted surgery is not the best option for every patient. Your surgeon will evaluate your eyes, talk with you about your lifestyle and vision goals, and help you decide whether a laser procedure and a premium lens package are a good fit.
